This Is Why I'm Broke breaks every affiliate rule. No in-depth reviews. No keyword strategy. Barely any text at all — just an endless grid of weird, wonderful products with one-liner captions. And at its peak it reportedly drew 2–3M monthly uniques and $20,000+/month.
The actual product: taste
TIWIB is pure curation. Ninja umbrellas, meat soaps, a grenade-shaped mug — products selected for one property: you have to show someone. Every item is a share waiting to happen, which means the audience does the marketing. Roughly half the items aren't even affiliate-linked; the founder has said the mix stays weighted toward "things worth seeing" over "things that pay," because the moment the grid feels like a catalog, the sharing stops.
Built on Reddit, deliberately
This is the part that matters for our thesis. TIWIB's growth wasn't SEO — it was Reddit: early traction in shareable-product subreddits, a founder AMA, and ongoing paid and organic presence in communities like r/shutupandtakemymoney whose entire culture is "look at this absurd thing you can buy." The site and the community share a native format. That's not luck; that's fit.
The economics
Amazon Associates plus Etsy and specialty retailers. Individually tiny commissions — offset by enormous volume, impulse-friendly products, and Amazon's whole-cart effect (they click for the taco truck lamp, they buy their whole basket). Monetization by volume only works because distribution costs approximately nothing.
What it proves
You don't need authority, reviews, or even much content if your site format and your community's format are the same shape. For most niches the lesson isn't "become a meme site" — it's: find the post format your target subreddit already loves, and build the site that produces it. Shakedown lists for r/Ultralight. Setup photos for r/espresso. Build lists for r/buildapc.
