How to Figure Out Your Niche (A Decision Framework, Not a List)

Lists of "best niches" answer the wrong question. The best niche for you sits at the intersection of what you can credibly write about for years and what the data says can pay. Here's the framework we use — the same one behind our scored niche database.

Filter 1: The two-year test

Post-HCU, winning sites are built on first-hand experience — real testing, real photos, real opinions. You cannot fake that for 100+ articles in a niche you find boring. Rule out anything you couldn't happily discuss at a party.

Filter 2: Buyer intent

Good niches have a research culture: people comparing models, asking "is it worth it," planning upgrades. Espresso gear, ultralight backpacking, mechanical keyboards — all research-heavy. If people just buy the first thing on Amazon (paper towels, phone chargers), there's nothing for your content to do.

Filter 3: The economics

A niche needs one of: high order values (a 5% commission on $2,000 bikes is real money), premium brand-direct programs (home security pays hundreds per sale), or recurring commissions (SaaS pays 20–30% monthly). If a niche only offers Amazon's 3–4% on $30 products, the math never works. Check the programs before committing — our program directory shows reported rates by niche.

Filter 4: Honest competition check

Google your target keywords. If page one is all NYT/Forbes/Wirecutter, the broad niche is closed — go one level tighter. "Fitness" is closed; "kettlebell training for people over 50" is not. Tight sub-niches with specific buyer language are where new sites still win.

Filter 5: The community test

Search Reddit for your niche. A living subreddit full of buying questions means demand, a research engine, and a distribution channel all at once. No community anywhere is a warning sign — either demand is too thin, or you've found a genuine gap you could fill yourself (the best-case scenario).

Putting it together

Score each candidate 1–5 on all five filters. Anything scoring 4+ across the board goes on your shortlist; then validate the winner with 10 pieces of bottom-of-funnel content before scaling.
