When you attempt to login to your hosting cPanel from your work/school computer, do you always get a message saying the “server is taking too long to respond”? I had this problem. I looked into it and this is what I found…
cPanel runs off of ports 2082 and 2083. Certain firewalls will block these two ports, which if you are behind a firewall that blocks these ports, you will not be able to access your cPanel. In such an event, you can use the cPanel proxy to access cPanel over the standard web port of 80. To do this, use http://cpanel.yourdomain.com (replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain name). cPanel proxy is enabled on some hosting accounts by default, but if you experience any problems with the cPanel proxy, please contact your webhost’s support department for additional assistance.
I contacted ServInt support online and they eventually set this up for me. The first tech didn’t understand what I was asking, and one even told me that it could not be done, but I politely re-framed the question and resubmitted it one day later. I suggested that maybe the Tier 2 department could help me.
Anyway, they were able to set it up and I can now use cPanel from work and I am much more productive at building websites now. (Not so productive doing my employer’s work, though.)
Yup, today I am a happy ServInt customer.

Hi Tony,
What the wording of request you sent to Servent? I ask my host to set up cpanel proxy and they did, but I still cannot access it on my workplace.
Thanks
Jason
Hi Jason. It took me multiple tries to get them to make it work for me too. Below, I’ve included the complete exchange between me and ServInt technical support.
Hi.
When I try to login to my server’s cpanel (https://xxxxxxx.info:2083/) from my work computer, I get this message: “The server at xxxxxx.info is taking too long to respond.” This only happens when I try to login from my work computer. I can login from my home computers.
I suspect my employer is somehow using a firewall to block me.
Are there any changes which can be made to my hosting account which will allow me to go around the firewall and login to cpanel from work?
Regards,
Tony

Hi,
Appears that you could be getting blocked by your work firewall, given the fact that you can access your account from anywhere else. I can also verify that I am able to access your WHM/cPanel account from my end. Now in this case this is not an issue with your account, this is something that needs to be resolved at the firewall level, which we don’t have any access to.
Hope this helps, if you have any other questions please let us know.
Best regards,
ServInt MST

Hi. Can you tell me if “cPanel Proxy” will help me with this issue? I’ve read that the cPanel Proxy script functionality is now native to cPanel/WHM as of version 11.23. If you think this will fix my firewall login problem, can you enable this functionality? And send me instructions on how to use it?
Thank you.

Hello,
This feature will not work. This is a proxy setting on the server so that you can be redirected to the proper ports when you specify domain.com/cpanel or for WHM and Webmail.

Hello.
From your reply: “This is a proxy setting on the server so that you can be redirected to the proper ports when you specify domain.com/cpanel or for WHM and Webmail.”
I think this is what I want. I believe my firewall on my work computer is blocking the ports normally used when logging in to cPanel. Can I use something like cpanel.xxxxxxx.info to get to my cPanel? Maybe can Tier 2 customer service help me with this?
Thanks.

Hello Tony,
Proxy URL’s for cPanel/WHM are now active. Your assumption was correct regarding proxy domains. What this feature allows, is the ability to access cPanel and WHM through port 80. I have recompiled Apache to include mod_proxy for this to work. You can access these areas now as:
http://cpanel.xxxxxx.info
http://whm.xxxxxx.info

Good morning. So I am now here at work using my computer which is using the firewall. When I go to http://cpanel.xxxxxx.info, I get this message: “SSL encryption is required for access to this server. Log in using SSL”. When I click “Log in using SSL”, it appears that the firewall blocks me again. I think the idea is to access Cpanel through port 80 instead of 2083, but when I click “Login using SSL” it appears to want to use 2083 again, which is firewall blocked. Can you fix this? I’d like to be able to use cPanel here on my work computer.

Tony
